The weasel infected rolled in his bed, his thoughts wouldn't settle down to let him rest.

"Emmett? You can't sleep?" He heard the drowsy parasite's voice in his head.

"That girl's face that time... What was that?" The young Tamed sat and turned the lampshade on. He probably wasn't going to fall asleep so early.

"You think those Harmony guys are being dumb?" Amulet suddenly felt more awake.

"I don't know. They're practically fighting against the world, that's at least pretty bold. Putting your life in risk and even sacrificing it when you see no other way to fight... It's true that she would have screwed them for good by revealing the base, but... That attitude... She didn't hesitate for a moment... She had something to give her life for..."

"While we animals seem to want to leave our traits to our decedents, some humans want to leave their ideas, don't they?"

The lad smiled at the parasite's observation. "You're getting pretty smart, uh?"

"I just listened to the others talk too."
The weasel chimed. "Luke said something like that once."

"Luke... I wonder how he and the girls are doing."
He looked at the case with his harmonica on his nightstand, the instrument was the greatest gift he had ever received and held memories of his stray friends. "Scratch what I said earlier, I did earn something from while I was with them." Emmett got up and picked an ancient Greek philosophy book from the shelf and then went back to bed to flip through it.

"According to the Cynics and the Stoics, happiness can be achieved by keeping calm toward emotions. To follow that idea, I had decided to try not caring much about things. But that did not stop me from feeling this void and questioning the meaning of my life. If I just keep trying not to give a damn, will I have that expression when I die too? Even if I have a long life, will it be more worthy living than a shorter one, but with passion?"

-

Emmett and Jackson made their way out of a repair shop, leaving behind the broken equipment. Standing in the hallway, their backs pressed against the wall as they tried to avoid the cameras, their senses sharp. The dog infected checked the time. "Two minutes left, we should get going..." He took deep breathes, the mission seemed to be coming along fine, but he couldn't wait to leave. "I hope the others aren't having too much trouble..." The lads moved toward the end of the room, reaching for the stairs.

Quick steps coming from the lower level. The two ex-Tameds looked at each other when they heard the sounds. With no place to hide in a hallway, they had to act fast. Jackson led the weasel infected into a room he had avoided earlier, but then they had no choice. As soon as the young men entered, they squeezed themselves between the big machines before they could be seen by two strange figures in the end of the large, spacious room.

The Harmony members stayed still as they heard more steps, the figures started coming closer. The dog infected felt a chill down his spine when two new kinds of GG soldiers passed by. Two insect-like soldiers with huge claws and antennae. One of them in black and orange armor, even though it wasn't in flames like in one of the pictures Keira had, there was no doubt it was the fire based bug. The other was fully covered in grey and light blue armor, an icy mist surrounded it.

Emmett also glared at them from behind Jackson. "Those things... Keira mentioned them and a possible third kind in development..." The weasel infected swallowed a lump at this thought, seeing those soldiers with an apparent absurd power, he had a bad feeling about what was to come. However, they had to focus on getting out of the room without getting caught. The thief concentrated on the sounds in the hallway, someone was still there. His breathing synchronized with his partner's. The other rebel also stayed alert, paying attention to the bugs' moves as well.

The hallway became quiet again, the guards weren't facing the rebels' direction. The two infected crept away form the machines and left the room. When they started heading to the stairs again, a conversation between two guards coming from the lower floor reached their ears.

    "Did you find anything?"

"Not at all, I can't believe those filthy animals may actually be here."

"We've been found..." The dog infected halted as he heart jumped. Now the soldiers raised their guard, the risk they were taking was even greater. Three Tamed betrayers including himself with high chances of meeting their deaths that night, the team split and unable to communicate. Jackson struggled not to panic, trying to focus on leaving with Emmett and hoping the others would make their way out safely as well.

"Fourth level." The weasel infected whispered to Jackson. "There was an open window in one of the rooms."

The younger one nodded, he remembered seeing the open window two levels below. They started to slowly climb down the stairs, as alert to sounds as they could be. Their steps extremely careful, synchronized slow breathing.

Reaching the aimed level, the two rebels sneaked into another repair shop. There it was, an open window at the edge of the room. They looked at each other and nodded when they heard more guards coming in their direction from the room in front, they probably were checking the one the infected were in next. Jackson rushed to the window, almost losing his focus on his footwork, his heart accelerating again. He jumped the window and landed on the ledge. The dog infected crouched down and slid to the side, making space for his partner. The fresh air outside was enough to relief his tension.

When the window was closed from the inside, Jackson's heart almost stopped. "What the..."

Still inside the room, Amulet hid under a machine. The weasel was paralyzed in fear after he had helped his host hiding in the last second, three guards searched the room after having the windows closed and blocked by plasma grates.

"Amulet, it's ok. Stay still and take deep breathes, I need you to be calm." Trying to keep his cool, the lad reassured his parasite as he felt his heart beats in a speed that could be lethal for a normal human.

"I'll try..." The parasite did what his host asked. "Damn, I knew this mission was a bad idea..."

"I'll get us outta here, I was serious when I said I wouldn't let myself be defeated. Just read my mind and let me guide you, ok?"

The creature cowered when seeing the guards' boots pass by really close. "I'm scared..."

"Amulet, you trust me, don't you? We've been together for seven years now, look at everything we survived together. You know me better than anyone else, you saw me go through lots of shit and come out alive. You saw me conquer the life in the streets. You saw me be chased by the Tamed and escape several times. You saw me nearly get killed by that caracal guy a few weeks ago and survive at the end. You really think I will let us die just like this after everything you saw?"

"Emmett... I trust you!" The parasite focused on his host. It was true, even though the lad's virtually suicidal decisions worried the weasel, they had already survived a lot. Since the host decided to take over that rabbit infected's will two years ago, longing for something to fight for with that passion, Amulet knew he would have to be brave too. "What do you want me to do?"

"Stay hidden for now, but look around a little..." Emmett analysed what the parasite's senses caught as he moved his head. "Wait, Amulet. Look to the left again."

"That's... A vent!" The weasel's eyes widened in anticipation at the sight of the grid on the wall, under a table. It seemed too narrow for a human, but in parasitic state, that wouldn't be a problem.

"Do you think you can use your claws to unscrew it?"

    "I think so."

"Get prepared. At my signal, I want you to go there. We also need to get away before someone notices we've taken the vent."

The parasite locked his stare on the spot, still listening to the guards steps. Amulet breathed deeply and steadily, trying to copy his host's demeanor when hiding. Being an animal, he had to focus on the moment, an attitude admired by some of the ex-Tamed's favorite philosophers. It wasn't time to anticipate getting caught, the plan to escape was priority in the parasite's and human's minds. Once the steps went farther, the host commanded. "Go!"

Outside, Jackson finally went back to where to group was supposed to meet. Vladimir, Collin and Nitzah turned to him, they seemed a bit scared at seeing the dog infected alone. Even though the young ex-Tamed was relieved seeing they were safe, tension and guilt took over his semblance.

"Where's Emmett?" Vladimir asked fearing the worst.

"He got stuck inside when we were leaving and I couldn't go back for him ..." The dog infected bit his lip. He knew it was very likely something could go wrong in that mission, but the thought of losing a fellow ex-Tamed that way still made him anxious. "I don't think they caught him, but..."

"No way!" Nitzah stared at the building with a frown. "What now? They are already suspecting someone has been there..."

"Let's wait for a bit... He needs to get out soon..." The lad rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"We can't do anything to help?" Collin also had his glare fixated on the building. "Anne isn't going to be happy about this..." He mumbled to himself.

"I don't think so, it would be too risky to try getting inside again now..." Jackson sighed.

The Harmony members stayed hidden and waited, their gaze wouldn't avert from the construction. The squad's leader kept his ears transformed, hoping to hear the weasel infected's steps coming toward them before they had to return. Even having psychologically prepared himself for something like that, he still didn't like the idea of having to tell Keira someone failed to leave the building. As the young ex-Tamed started feeling nauseous from the stockpiled stress, he tried breathing deeply and thinking about going back to the base and resting.

Nitzah let out a quiet sigh while tapping her fingers on her leg, worried about the weasel infected and also starting to feel irritated as the night slowly progressed. Collin had the sheep infected in mind, even though they could say they succeeded, he thought about how she would react if they actually lost Emmett. The hyena infected tried his best to keep calm, fearing Cole still could take over. Vladimir tried to come up with a plan to help, not wanting his friend to get caught. There should be a way, Jackson was right about it being dangerous to go back inside, but the former GG soldier didn't want to give up.

The dog infected jumped when he heard chirping and swift steps. He turned to the direction the sounds came from and spotted Amulet in parasitic form approaching. The weasel's body shifted back to human state midway. The group exhaled in relief. "Quick, let's leave!" Jackson made a sign for the other infected to follow him. It was finally over.

-

Emmett yawned and stretched in his bed, after the tension from the previous night, waking up feeling so refreshed at home made the mission seem like something distant. The weasel infected wanted to enjoy the comfort of his room a bit more, but his stomach felt pretty empty.

"Morning, Emmett." Amulet's illusion appeared lying on his chest. "Let's get some breakfast."

"Yeah." The ex-Tamed turned to look at his alarm clock. It marked 1:30 pm. "Nope, lunch." He got up wiping a strand of drool off his cheek. "Man, that was some heavy sleep."

Once ready for the day, the lad exited his room and went toward the mess hall. In the hallway, he spotted the Harmony's leader coming in the opposite direction. "It's about time I asked her."

"Hey Lavvy, I got a question for you."

The wolf infected rolled her eyes while still walking. "Yes, I'm sure I'm not a guy."

"It's not about that this time." Emmett followed the woman. "You see, while I was at the Tamed, there was this Harmony member I helped my teammates to capture. They tried to interrogate her, but she managed to get herself killed. She was a rabbit infected with black fur, completely red eyes and glowing red markings."

She stopped, her eyes widened for a brief moment. "Alma..." The name slipped out the leader's mouth in a quiet voice.

"Alma... So that was her name?"

Lavinia nodded lightly, frowning again. "Alma Jakeman. That asshole... So she did get killed."

"If that comforts you, she's kinda my role model now. She didn't hesitate for a moment and I can tell you her sacrifice wasn't vain."

"Comfort me?" The female snorted with a scornful smirk. "It's a fucking war! You think I'd be the leader of a rebellion if I were to get depressed at some random members getting themselves killed? She didn't last long anyway!"

"Her determination didn't seem like just a random member's with a superior who doesn't give a crap."

She looked away and took a deep breath. "Whatever, what about her?"

"I just wanted to know her name." The weasel infected smiled and walked away.

"Rest in peace, Alma. You're a hero now, to the Harmony and to my existence."

EDIT: Splash picture added, part 2 will get one too.

Phew, finally done. To be honest, I'm not satisfied with how this mission turned out, but I couldn't stand working on it anymore. Most of the sabotage itself was offscreen because I wasn't sure about how to make it interesting... I hope this was at least a bit better than my previous mission. ;w;

I wanna do something else with Alma in the future, as Lavvy says here, she didn't actually last a lot in the war (let's say she was in the Harmony for around 6-7 months until her death), but her loyalty was strong for reasons I want to work on.
